Lost in Novel-Land
Weekly Wednesday Writing Prompt (ADDED BONUS INSIDE!!)

As I was typing the title, I was hoping that it actually was Wednesday and I wouldn’t be getting a lot of emails telling me what a crazy bat I am.

Now that I’ve checked the desk calendar and confirmed the day, we can begin.

First of all, before the prompt, I have to apologize for making myself sparce. I’ve been swamped with school work and it’s only been put on thicker these past few days. Plus work is getting in the way and I’m an just a ball of stress right now. A stress ball would come in handy.

All right, I’ve covered that, so let the writing begin!

This week, I’d like you to do a little role playing. There are two characters, you pick their names. One is a boy, one is a girl. They can be any age. They are anywhere you’d like them to be.

BUT—

(And you knew that was coming.)

It has to only be written in dialogue.

What does that mean?

Well, most importantly, it means no tag lines.

(What the heck are tag lines??)

In the dialogue below, the underlined words are “tag lines.”

Suzy walked up to Cliff. “Why are you so sad?” Cliff was crying. “My puppy ran away,” he said.

That’s a big no-no in this exercise.

Well, you ask, how would we know who’s talking??

(Good question. Next please?)

Here’s an example:

“Cliff, why do you look so sad?”
“My puppy ran away. Suzie, have you ever lost a pet before?”
“No, I’ve never owned a pet. You must be hurting a lot. Do you want me to help?”
“That would be swell, Suzie! Thank you!”
“No problem. Anything to help out a friend.”

Okay, I’m sure you’re all bursting at the seams to start writing, but one more little intsy weenie thing.

(Hahaha. I can hear you all begging now.)

It has to be 500 words or more.

For all you over-achievers out there, there’s an added bonus. You guys get to write an entire short story (with only two characters for now): developed characters, setting, plot, everything using only dialogue.

Have fun with that one. ;)
